Decoding the Esoteric Symbolism of Tarot
Presented Malik W Tillman
In this presentation, we explore the layered and complex esoteric symbolism woven into the Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot. Both A. E. Waite and Pamela Colman Smith were steeped in esoteric traditions, and their knowledge shaped the deck's imagery. Viewed through the lens of symbolic initiation, details emerge that often go unnoticed.
We'll follow the Fool's Journey, tracing how the cards encode motifs and structures found in the writings of esoteric orders, and uncover patterns that invite a deeper, more informed reading of the deck. We'll see the Fool's Journey as a symbolic initiation story, marked by archetypal gatekeepers, trials, and transformations -- and how these stages align with the four suits of the Minor Arcana. Each suit reflects a distinct phase of the journey, linked to the four cardinal virtues and the four elements, framing the Fool's progression toward integration.
Along the way, we will also touch upon Waite's other writings, as well as key esoteric works circulating at the time of the deck's creation, to shed light on potential influences and symbolic choices. This includes exploring the Arthurian structure underlying parts of the Major Arcana and its resonance with medieval quest narratives. By mapping these stages and symbols against Hermetic, Kabbalistic, and alchemical sources, we can observe how Waite and Smith wove layers of meaning that reward a careful eye. The point of the Fool's Journey, through this lens, is not simply to move from beginning to end, but to undergo a cycle of transformation—emerging armed with the wisdom of all four elemental paths.
