The Language of Flowers and their Symbolism in Tarot

Presented by Janey Keble Johnston

For centuries flowers have long held their own significance and meaning. In the Victorian era mysticism, esotericism and occultism became increasingly popular in tapping into the language of flowers to convey meanings of love, grief, joy, shame and public humiliation from the giver to the receiver. We still understand these today. Arthur E Waite commissioned Pamela Coleman-Smith (both members of the Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn) into creating a tarot deck with appeal to the wider world of art, depicting full scenes on all the cards (including the Pips) with figures and symbols. With her artist talents and bohemian lifestyle she masterfully created a tarot deck that used many secrets and messages full of symbolism previously known and understood by a selective few. The use of flowers and their language came naturally to being part of the scenery with significance in adding meaning to the interpretation. Today we shall explore some cards I have chosen as significant.

Bio:

Janey has been learning and reading the Tarot since the 1990s. With her love of learning the esoteric she joined a women’s’ circle for approximately 4 years being based on the divine feminine Goddess energy. There she practiced a wealth of skills and modalities - namely: dreaming the tarot, moon rituals, Shamanic practices, psychometry, crystals, chakras, pendulums, different meditation styles (with retreats) with general Hands on Healing and Reiki. When reading the tarot she works as a conduit using her strong empathy and intuition to bring together the combined energies along with the Spirit Guides present to convey the messages being revealed for each client. In conveying the spiritual wisdoms and truths revealed she encourages her clients into open discussion to gain clarity and insight into their unique situation. Thus each client gains agency and empowerment to consciously and actively navigate their life in a more resourceful and meaningful way. Janey joined the Guild in 2019, became a Professional Member in 2020, is currently a Committee Member and the Membership Secretary of the Tarot Guild. Residing in rural Victoria she is setting up monthly Coffee and Cards Castlemaine gatherings for rural tarot enthusiasts.
